The Nchima Trust is a small charity, originally founded in 1962 by the Gardiner family. The Trust has developed a strong focus on sponsoring education. In Malawi, the Nchima Trust has one or two unpaid volunteers who ensure that all funding is spent appropriately but no paid employees.
The Trust's aim with the Nchima Trust Centre is to provide a facility to encourage entrepreneurship and self sufficiency. All the cards are made by self-employed people who live locally to the Nchima Trust Centre. The card makers use shredded, recycled paper to make the cards by mixing it into a pulp and then drying the sheets. The cards are then decorated with dried banana stems and leaves, feathers, cloth, beads and an assortment of other items.
